Well here it is! My very first sketch of Cierra! I still remember drawing this on the floor of my friend's house. What I don't remember is...what was going through my head when I drew her face!!!
My style was COMPLETELY different back then. This had to be uh...maybe 2003? Ugh....didn't realize until I wrote this that it was almost 10 years ago!!!!
So from one form of ugly to another. Here goes Cierra looking less like a traditional witch and more of....whatever this is. Around her waist is the jacket that I decided she wears as a kid. And you can see I have the scarf, but didn't come up with the domino design yet. And who is that next to her? Could it be? Yep, it's Jack!
This is around the time I was going to send in to Tokyopop. Unfortunately I can't find the roughs for the pages I submitted to them. But if I do so, I'll add them to the artbook and also share it with the rest of you who aren't getting the artbook.
So jumping back into the present, I wanted to share some concepts of CIerra. She is by far the hardest character for me to draw. I had to have made over 100 sketches of her face, trying to get her just right. What's the right balance of beautiful and cool? Strong and still vulnerable?
Here are two pages from the manga. For the dream sequence, I wanted to try a different style. It was a lot of fun playing around with a more loose and foreign drawing style. I might have to use it more often in some mini comics or something.
